Sumter
SC was named after Thomas Sumter, “The Fighting
Gamecock”, and is located near the center of the
state. Sumter began as a plantation settlement,
and grew into a city. Today it is home to Shaw
Air Force Base, Swan Lake and Iris Gardens, the
Palmetto Tennis Center, and Riley Park.
Shaw Air Force Base is the largest employer in
the area and home to the 9th Air Force and 20th
Fighting Wing. Fighter planes from Shaw Air
Force Base were the primary fighters used in the
Gulf War.
Swan Lake and Iris Gardens is a special place in
Sumter SC. It is the only park in the United
States inhabited by all eight species of swans.
The city holds “The Iris Festival” here each
year on Memorial Day weekend, as well as a large
light display during the holiday season.
Sumter SC is also a great place for sports.
Riley Park is a 4,000 seat stadium that has been
home to farm league teams for the Atlanta Braves
and the Montreal Expos. It is currently the home
of the P-15’s, an American legion team. The
Palmetto Tennis Center hosts the collegiate
national championships in tennis each year on
its 18 official-sized tennis courts.
During your visit to Sumter SC, don't forget
Rascals is the place for great food and family
fun.
